SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS/CARDS
Issues Social Security numbers/cards. The purpose of Social Security numbers/cards is to track earnings and benefits throughout a worker's lifetime. There are three types of cards. The first allows work without restriction for U.S. Citizens and permanent resident aliens. The second type of card indicates "Not Valid for Employment" and is issued to persons lawfully admitted to the U.S. without DHS work authorization but who need the number because of federal, state, or local law requiring the number for benefits or services. The third type of card started in 1992 indicates "Valid for Work Only With DHS Authorization" and is issued to persons admitted to the U.S. on a temporary basis with DHS authorization to work.
